Human beings have many fundamental needs—some are physical, like food, water, and shelter 🍖💧🏕️, while others are spiritual, like connection, meaning, and belonging 🕊️💡❤️. No matter where we live, we always find ways to meet these needs. One amazing thing about humans is that we can make tools and create systems that allow us to live almost anywhere on Earth 🌏. From freezing tundras ❄️ to scorching deserts 🏜️, we adapt. But, even though we can change, we often love the way of life we’re used to, so when things change, it can be hard.
Sometimes, when we can no longer meet our needs—when food becomes scarce, water dries up, or we seek freedom to follow our beliefs—we make a big decision. We move. This movement is called migration, from the Latin word migrare, meaning to move or shift 🚶♂️➡️.
Migration is a tough choice. It means leaving behind the land where we were born 🌄, the familiar places where our traditions were built 🏠. When we move to new lands, we often find different climates 🌦️, landscapes, and challenges. We may need to build new types of shelters 🏘️, find new sources of food 🍇, or even create new ways of expressing our beliefs 🙏. We carry some of our old traditions, but we often have to create new ones to fit our new home.
But migration doesn’t just bring us to new places. It brings us into contact with other human groups 👥, groups that have lived in these places for many years and developed their own ways of life. What happens then? Sometimes, the two groups share ideas 💡, trade goods 🔄, and cooperate to make life better for everyone. But other times, there is conflict ⚔️, as each group holds tightly to its traditions and resources.
Throughout history, human beings have faced these choices. Will we work together and adapt? Can we blend our traditions and find new ways to meet everyone’s needs? Or will we resist change, clinging to our old ways and creating conflict?
One of the earliest forms of migration began with nomadic hunters—humans who followed the herds of animals across vast distances to survive. 🌍 These early humans lived a life of constant movement, always in search of food and water. They had no permanent home because their survival depended on the animals they hunted 🏹. Wherever the animals went, they followed.
🌍 Imagine you are one of the early humans, a nomadic hunter living 20,000 years go. Your family moves with the seasons 🍂, traveling wherever the animals 🐘 lead you. Your survival depends on them. What you will do every day? School? No, you join your family to hunt 🏹. It’s not just about meeting your physical needs - food 🍖; it’s about working together, as teamwork is the only way to catch enough to feed everyone. Collect enough berries or dig enough roots. 🫐🥔 And celebrate the share by the end of the day Enjoying stories by the fire, singing songs, crafting art and meeting your spiritual needs together. 🔥
You walk longer distances through dense forests 🌳 and even into icy regions ❄️. Always, you follow the mammoths 🐘 and other animals. When the moment comes, you and your family unite—some chase the animals toward the cliffs 🏞️, while others wait below. It is this cooperation that ensures your delicious dinner 💪🥘.
But it’s not just the animals that decide when you move. Sometimes, the land changes—plants stop growing,🌾 and rivers run dry 🚱. When this happens, you gather everything you own , because it is not alot and it is easy to carry, and you move to new lands, where you make a new home 🏞️.
Moving is not always easy 😕. You often meet other groups along the way 👥. Sometimes they are friendly, and you trade ideas 💡, food 🍇, or tools 🔨. Other times, you must defend your family, fighting ⚔️ to protect what is yours. There is always risk because you do not know what is behind the next hill⚠️, but you keep moving, because you are in a search for place which as enough water, enough berries or other source of food and a safe place to settle. 🌟 Imagine being nomadic hunter , what do you think it would have been like to travel across the world without modern technology? 🏞️
Questions to wonder aloud :
• How do you think early humans found food and water during their journeys? 🌾💧
• Why do you think some ancient people decided to leave their homelands and explore unknown lands? 🌍👣
• How do you think early humans met their spiritual needs? What stories they told to each other or what art they made ? Did they create music? With what instruments? 🎨🔥
• What do you think made their communities strong? How do working together and exchanging skills and tools helped them ? 🤝
