With this story I will use chart H2 - Fundamental Human Needs - Foods
We’ve discovered that all humans have both spiritual and physical needs, and that these needs shape the ways we live and connect with one another. Among all physical needs, food stands out as one of the most important. 🍞🍎 We also have a special chart of Fundamental Needs, dedicated entirely to Food. Food is not only something we need to survive; it’s something that brings us joy, sparks our creativity, and invites us to connect with others.
Today, let’s think about food! We’re going to talk about a food that connects people across time and continents. It’s a food that has been enjoyed for thousands of years in all cultures around the globe! It is a clever combination of different products which we can see on the chart : Animal Products and Vegitables. This combination results in something delicious that you all know very well—Bread! 🍞
But today, my story is about a special type of bread, unlike any bread you can imagine. Here’s a hint: it’s especially famous for being prepared during the winter months because its spicy flavors are perfect for cold days ❄️🌬️. And it’s flat, less than a centimeter tall. And it’s sweet! Can you guess what it might be?
Here are a few last hints!
This bread contains famous spices, including a special star ingredient: ginger! 🌱✨ It even shares its name with this spice, and people love to decorate it. Sometimes it’s shaped into stars ⭐, hearts ❤️, or even little people 👤! Do you think you know the name of this unusual bread? 🍪
Yes! It’s gingerbread! 🍪
Thousands of years ago, ginger was used in China for its warming and healing properties 🌱✨. Over time, ginger and other precious spices traveled west along the famous Silk Road 🛤️🕌. The journey was long and difficult, so by the time these spices reached Europe, they were incredibly expensive—so costly that only royalty could afford to enjoy them 👑💰!
As new sea routes to Asia were discovered 🌊🧭, goods and spices like ginger and cinnamon became more easy to be delivered . Soon, they were found in everyone’s kitchen! People began experimenting with these new spices, adding them to both sweet and savory dishes 🍲🍰.
And this is where the story of gingerbread truly begins! 🍪✨ Driven by curiosity and creativity, bakers found that ginger added a unique warmth and fragrance to their bread, unlike anything else. As they experimented more, they created a new kind of bread that was spicy, sweet, and perfect for the cold winter days.❄️🧣.Bakers got even more creative with their gingerbread, shaping it into stars ⭐, hearts ❤️ and animals 🦊The gingerbread hearts became especially popular in Germany! ❤️💞 At the Christmas markets, bakers would make large gingerbread hearts decorated with colorful icing, and sweet little messages, almost like a little Valentine’s card in Christmas! 🍪💞
Around 500 years ago Gingerbread man was born in Englad 👨🍪 and it soon became a beloved treat, especially during the winter holidays. 🍪❄️In the 16th century In Englad , Queen Elizabeth I came up with a playful idea, she ordered her royal bakers to make gingerbread cookies shaped like little man to Wellcome her guests at her Christmas party. I wonder did they had cookie cutters 500 years ago?
200 years ago the Gingerbread House was born in Germany.🏠🍬 As people continued experimenting with gingerbread dough, thet created beautiful gingerbread house, decorated with icing and candies, especially around Christmas. This tradition became even more popular after the Brothers Grimm wrote the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel, where two children discover a house made of gingerbread and sweets deep in the forest! People loved the idea of gingerbread houses, and it became a holiday favorite all over the world. Later, in America, the famous story of The Gingerbread Man who ran as fast as you can was born 📜🍪.
Think about some of your favorite foods! Do you see them on the chart? Or they are made with combination of different ingredients like the gingerbread? Do you know where they originate from?
